Mountain Lions Conflict With Desert Sheep
10/02/2001
When California mountain lions are not eating women, children and pets,
they are eating endangered desert bighorn sheep. A recent study documents
that they kill desert sheep at a very high rate and are the single greatest
threat to the sheep. The recent study is cited in the National Wildlife
Federation February/March issue of National Wildlife. Seventy percent of the
45 radio-collared bighorn that have died and been tracked down over the past
three years were killed by mountain lions! All of the effort that has been
made for years to save those desert bighorn sheep has merely been providing
lion food to the excessive lion population. The lions have also now been
documented to kill prime breeding ewes, not just old animals and young
lambs.
